Technology for Change: Levi’s “Go Forth” Facebook App

Levi’s Jeans is an example of a well-established, extremely recognizable American brand that is using their marketing efforts to do some good. The Levi’s brand, “epitomizes classic American style and effortless cool.” We think their use of T4C is really cool!

The Levi’s Facebook application for the “Go Forth” advertising campaign brings consumers’ experience with the brand beyond just buying jeans. The app spotlights “Pioneers” that are seeking funding for mission-driven initiatives. Levi’s fans can show their support for these initiatives by posting a link to the app with a description of the initiative on their Facebook wall. Levi’s holds funds in escrow, and when an initiative has met its support goal, the funds are “unlocked” and given to the Pioneer to fund their initiative.

Go Forth has successfully funded several Pioneer initiatives. The first Pioneer spotlight was Water.org, which was co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White and raised funds to bring clean water for life to 8,000 people in Africa. Other initiatives have received funding, including the Thanda After-School program for AIDS orphans and Swarathma, an Indian-folk-fusion band that raises social awareness through free concerts. Currently, Bess the Book Bus is seeking support for a mobile literacy program that travels to schools and shelters around the US to read books to children and give away free books.

With over 9 million Facebook page “likes”, Levi’s has the opportunity to create a huge impact, as well as serve as a positive example for other large corporations, by leveraging social media in ways like the Go Forth app.
