Technology for Change: GirlDevelopIT - Hamptons Hack for Humanity

In the web development industry, where up to 91% of programmers are male, GirlDevelopIT is breaking new ground. There are currently seven chapters based out of major US cities, as well as Sydney, Australia and Ottawa, Canada. Chapters offer workshops on technologies, including HTML/CSS, Javascript/JQuery, PHP/MySQL, Android development, web applications with Ruby on Rails, and more.

GirlDevelopIT recently made major news with its Hamptons Hack for Humanity event held over a weekend in July. A group of female developers, designers, writers and researchers worked on a multi-faceted campaign against human trafficking. One team created a Ruby on Rails app that crawls and flags Craigslist posts that are related to human trafficking. Others created QR codes that draw attention to and educate people on human trafficking. The main focus of the hackathon was given to developing the choose-your-adventure online game, Commuting in Traffic.

While playing Commuting in Traffic, the “Did You Know” section on every page educates players with statistics and facts about the human trafficking that goes on in New York City. The game was built with scalability in mind, and it can be played in over 10 billion ways! Read more about the Hamptons Hack for Humanity event on the GirlDevelopIT blog.

Fast Company’s coverage of the event compares the all-girl hack with its macho counterparts, as well as looking at several other organizations that work to bring women into the male-dominated tech industry.
