Technology for Change: Rebuild the Dream

Rebuild the Dream is a national movement that launched on June 23, 2011 at an event in NYC. The launch could be viewed online via Livestream, and featured an hour-long, charismatic speech by Van Jones. Jones addressed issues of concern to America’s middle class workers such as unemployment, housing and the economy. Watch the video highlights here.

Contract for the American Dream is the next phase in this movement. Rebuild the Dream, along with MoveOn.org, is using crowdsourcing technology to build a, “blueprint for creating an economy that works for all of us. We're looking for the best ideas to rebuild the American Dream and unite our movement.” Visitors of this site can contribute ideas as well as rate the ideas of others. Contract for the American Dream launched July 5th. 48 hours later the site had 12,000 ideas contributed and almost 3 million idea ratings!

The Twitter hashtag, #americandream, is being used to gain support and momentum for the Rebuild the Dream movement. Traditional grassroots organizing methods like the hosting of local American Dream house meetings are benefiting from this use of social media. There is also a web app on the Rebuild the Dream website that allows you to locate a house meeting by zip code.

The combined forces of crowdsourcing, social media, and a strong online video and web presence make the Rebuild the Dream movement a great example of technology for change.
