Technology for Change: Green For All

Green For All, an Oakland, California-based organization’s mission is “to build an inclusive green economy, strong enough to lift people out of poverty”. This idea of an inclusive green economy pushes a mainstream shift towards sustainability, and challenges the old standard of environment vs. economic growth.

Green For All uses their YouTube channel to reach out to a young demographic and to encourage political awareness and participation. Their work on YouTube utilizes recent technological advances that make creating interactive videos easier using Adobe Flash Catalyst and YouTube’s Video Annotations feature. For example, “California Sabotage – Prop 23” is a part of Green For All’s interactive “choose-your-adventure” video series in which viewers learn about a ballot initiative supported by Texas Big Oil interests. The video is a parody of hip-hop group Beastie Boys’ 1997 music video for the song, “Sabotage”. Viewers choose how the video ends based on whether they: “vote yes”, “don’t vote at all”, or “vote no”.
